Connotation is the emotional ideas surrounding a word. • For instance, the word “snake” connotes evil and danger. Everyone reacts emotionally to words, so writers should carefully choose words that will cause desired emotions in their readers.

Automobile names connotation activity Here are the names of some new cars: Buzzard Dodo Gnat Squid Toad Ox Slug Porcupine Rhinoceros Eel Walrus Stegosaurus Write the denotative (dictionary) meaning of the animal. Describe the new car. Who drives it? What does it look like? How is it advertised? How big and fast is it? What type of car is it: van, SUV, sports car? Write your connotative meaning of the original word by generalizing what characteristics you chose for your car.
