  1. One if by Land, Two if by Sea Chapter 14

  2. Conflict turned into war when the minutemen and redcoats scuffled at Lexington and Concord. The march toward nationhood had begun.

  3. Terms to define: • green • accost • disperse • huzza • grenadier • minuteman • Yankee Doodle

  4. green • A green is a grassy lawn or common. Many New England villages have a green for public gatherings.

  5. accost • To accost someone means to approach and speak to or touch him or her -but not gently.

  6. disperse • Disperse means to break up and scatter. • “Disperse, you rebels, . . . Throw down your arms and disperse.”

  7. huzza • Huzza is an old-fashioned word for “yell.” It’s something like “hurrah.” The rebels were yelling at the British soldiers.

  8. grenadier • Grenadiers, dragoons, regulars, redcoats – they’re all British soldiers.

  9. minuteman • The American farmers were ready, and they grabbed their guns. They were called minutemen because they could fight on a minute’s notice.

  10. Yankee Doodle • The British made up the song “Yankee Doodle” to insult the Americans. After the battle, the Americans sang the song, “We’ll be Yankee Doodles and proud of it.”
