  1. How English is our TRIFLE?

  2. Ingredients Old English trifle, consisting of raspberry jelly, bananas, trifle sponge, sherry, custard and topped with whipped cream and decorated with flaked almonds and fresh raspberries.

  3. Your task! • Divide into 6 groups • Look at the ingredients of our English trifle. There are a number of possible projects, research areas for each of our ingredients. • By the end of the lesson you should have identified the ingredient and the area of research you will concentrate on. • You will have 2 lessons and 3 preps to prepare a presentation for a Year 9 activity morning.

  4. The presentation • It should show the origin of the ingredients of our ‘English Trifle’. • link the ingredients of the trifle with the global issue of food production and distribution, compare with locally produced food, alcohol production and consumption and healthy eating • It could be in the form of posters, power point presentations or a booklet. • The following guide may be of help.

  5. Raspberry Jelly • A gel is solid particles arranged like a net so that liquid particles are trapped around them, the solid in jelly is Gelatine. • You could look at the use of prepared Jelly, show how this differs from the old fashioned jelly made from separate ingredients. • Where is Gelatine obtained from? • Why would a strict Buddhist not eat certain jellies?

  6. Bananas • All our bananas are imported • Research the FAIRTRADE issues surrounding bananas • This must be covered by a group also taught by A Gray.

  7. Trifle sponge – could be in 2 parts The perfect sponge is light and fluffy. It is made from eggs, flour , butter and milk. Compare the ingredients of our pre-packed sponge and the one we could make at home. List the differences. Explore the implications of using palm oil in our foods/shampoo etc. How could we make our sponge more ‘English’?

  8. Sherry • Research the origins of sherry. • This could be linked to the use and misuse of alcohol. • A comparison could be made between the abuse of alcohol in the under 18’s in this country to other countries.

  9. Whipped cream • How is milk treated to become whipped cream? • What is the difference between organic and non-organic sources? • Intensely reared animals vs. home farms

  10. How healthy is our Trifle? • Many foods contain lots of fat and carbohydrate to give us energy and keep us warm over the winter. Excess energy is stored as fat. • Use the ‘Healthy Eating’ plate to show how healthy our trifle is. • Look at the average calorie intake of teenagers in the UK compared to other countries. • Outline the problems with obesity/overeating in the UK.
