  1. Unit AChapter 3 Plant Growth & Adaptations

  2. Basic Needs of Plants L - light A - air (carbon dioxide) W - water N - nutrients

  3. Needs for Photosynthesis C - chlorophyll L - light (energy) A - air (CO2) W - water

  4. Photosynthesis Photo = light Synthesis = putting together Light is put together with water & CO2to make food

  5. Photosynthesis

  6. Taprootone main root that grows deep into the ground

  7. Fibrous Rootsmany roots of the same size

  8. Stem • support plant and give them shape • inside stem are tubes • tubes move water, nutrients, & food to all parts of the plant • can store water and food • two types: flexible & woody

  9. Flexible Stems • thin, waxy covering protects them • small plants • live for only one growing season

  10. Woody Stem • hard and thick • layer of bark protects them • each year can grow thicker & taller • live for many years
