    1. Who are WE and what do we do? Ithaca College Natural Lands

    2. What is ICNL? ICNL stands for Ithaca College Natural Lands ICNL serves as an advisory body to the Vice President for Finance and Administration for the stewardship of Ithaca College’s natural areas.  Started in 2004 Mission: Maintain the educational value and ecosystem services of these lands Support co-curricular activities Guide compatible economic and recreational development

History of ICNL In January 2004, faculty from the Biology Department worked with the college administration to develop a management plan the natural lands owned by the college in Newfield, New York.  One of the results was the establishment of the Ithaca College Natural Areas Stewardship Committee (NASC).  NASC served as the management entity for the Newfield property.  In addition, the committee was to develop management recommendations for the land owned by Ithaca College adjacent to campus on South Hill.  In early 2005 the NASC was reorganized as the Ithaca College Natural Lands Committee (ICNL). 

    4. Bob Robinson Family Preserve Ithaca College Natural Resource Reserve In the 1970's, Bob Robinson donated a parcel of 126 acres in Newfield to Ithaca College. In 2005, based on recommendations from ICNL, Ithaca College established the Robert Robinson Family Preserve. It is now in a conservation easement with the Finger Lakes Land Trust Natural Lands managed by ICNL

    5. South Hill Natural Area Before Ithaca College bought the land, South Hill used to be farmland and homesteads. In 1958, Ithaca College acquired enough money to move to South Hill. South Hill is currently used by students and faculty for classes, for research projects, as well as recreational use on both the Blue and Gold Trails.

    9. ICNL Stewards Program What does it mean to be a land steward? A basic definition of land stewardship is: “the practice of carefully managing land usage to ensure natural systems are maintained or enhanced for future generations.” www.landstewardship.org

    13. ICNL Stewards are required to: Commit a full semester to the program Pick a designated parcel of land Walk through their parcel at least once a week Fill out Monthly Monitoring Report If any significant violation is found, call the Office of Public Safety Requirements for an ICNL Steward

Recognition The Ithaca College Natural Lands Volunteer Stewards Program received a “Signs of Sustainability Award” for 2009 from Sustainable Tompkins Programs for Stewards: Invasive Species training GPS Instruction Nature Walks Native species education Bird watching Wildlife Tracking Common Tree diseases training Invasive Insects
