What if I am not a Christian? • You will learn Christian values from the Bible and what your teachers share with you • You will learn how to care about others through community service • You will learn how to show love and forgiveness toward others • You will learn a Biblical worldview • You will learn how to make important decisions for your future

  4. Introduction letter A few things have changed since last year. Please read this complete newsletter and discuss it with your host parents. :) It contains information about English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom expectations and procedures. Also there is a supply list, daily schedule, and curriculum information. There is a video I made to show what you need for your ESL binder and how to organize it.   5. I have an exciting year planned for you this year. We have new text books for this class!  The curriculum is called Milestones and it will help you to develop the academic ability necessary that you need to do well in your regular classes. Milestones

ESL Classroom Rules Speak English only Native language can only be spoken if permission is granted by the teacher Participate in class 20% of your grade – includes being prepared for class Complete given assignments 60% of your grade – includes homework and other assignments Don’t be afraid to ask questions

  7. Electronic Devices Use of electronic (or paper) dictionaries only (For new students only) • All returning students must use classroom dictionaries only. New students may use electronic dictionaries for the 1st quarter only. All students may use electronic dictionaries in all other classes except ESL class. • All other electronic devices are prohibited – MP3 players, laptops/computers, iPods and iPads, cameras and cell phones, etc.; • Any violation to these rules will be disciplined which will lead to these items taken away and can only be picked up and returned to you by your host family; • Students are expected to respect and obey all school rules. If the students continue to violate this rule after the third offense, the item will not be returned to the students.

  8. Consequences of not following ESL Classroom Rules • First Offense: You will lose class participation points for that class period; this will affect your ESL grade. Also, the teacher will email your host family informing them of your behavior. You will have to return a signed letter from your host family the next day.

  9. Second Offense: You will describe in writing how you should behave in class. Your privileges of sports and other events will be taken away. Your international student organization and your birth parents will be notified about your misbehavior. • Third Offense: You will be sent to Mr. Curry’s office. He will discuss with you about your consequences and further action will be taken. Please keep this in mind, the school and the teachers DO NOT tolerate misbehavior or nonsense.

  10. Grading for ESL classes • 20% Participation in class and prepared for class • 20% Homework (turned in on time) • 35% Projects (turned in on time) • 10% Quizzes • 10% Tests • 5% Organization (binder checks)

ESL Class Supply List • 3-ring binder – containing a three ring binder hole punch, at least 5 dividers with tabs, 1 notebook for journal writing (college ruled) and extra notebook paper (college ruled). • pens and pencils, colored pencils and highlighters • index cards for notes and flash cards http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f39m9zj3U2k
