  4. Learning from QAF • Importance of: • Strategic roadmap • Senior-level corporate buy-in • Relationships with other parts of organisation – internal and external • Impact on quality of care. • Continuous improvement process linked with corporate priorities.

Next steps • Review of QAF outcomes and fitness for purpose in 2010/11 compared with 2007 • Coordinating Group • NHS QIS • National Health Knowledge Network Steering Group • Sound foundations within the bigger picture: • Quality strategy – impact on clinical governance standards • Financial environment • Political environment

National Health Knowledge Network • Commitment within Enabling Partnerships - • “Building a knowledge-based organisational culture.” • Representatives of healthcare organisations: • Work together to implement and further develop the KM strategy – locally and nationally. • Define and implement common standards for knowledge management – growing out of QAF standards.

Convening National Health Knowledge Network • Chair identified • Letter from NES CEO and Chair to NHS Board CEOs – nomination at senior strategic level to take Chief Knowledge Officer role. • Emphasis on knowledge management as: • Getting best value out of existing resources, tools and processes. • Improving quality and outcomes through knowledge.

Implications for Librarian network • Applying foundational skills and knowledge to demonstrate value in new context: • Achieving efficiency and best value • Improving quality and outcomes – link with Quality Strategy • Leading and facilitating role in knowledge management strategy – gaining and retaining partner and senior-level involvement.
