  2. Ch.1: Your Employment Relationship I. The Changing 21st Century Labor Force A. Labor Force/Workforce – This refers to the people who are available and want to work. If you are currently working, or looking for a job, you are part of the labor force. B. Changes – Because of several social factors, today’s workforce is very different from the workforce of previous generations. 1. There are more older people working today than in previous generations. 2. There are more women working than in previous generations. 3. There are more ethnicities represented in the workforce than in previous generations.

  3. I. The Changing 21st Century Labor Force (continued) C. The labor force of the future will represent a broad range of people. People of different ages, both sexes, and ethnic backgrounds will continue to work together D. The internet has changed the workforce. If your employer conducts business over the internet, you very well may be working with someone in another country.

  4. II. The Structure of Work • Most companies recognize in order to be competitive, they must have a work force that is as small as possible. This saves money. Organizations use a combination of employees to get the work done. 1. Core employees – traditional employees with traditional working arrangements. 2. Independent Contractors – self employed people who provide a specific service to an organization, usually for a specific amount of time. 3. Contract firms – are other organizations that supply workers to a company. 4. On-call workers – are called when they are needed. They are paid only when they work. 5. Temporary workers – are hired by an organization for a temporary amount of time and are located by an employment service.

  5. II. The Structure of Work (continued) B. Contingent Workforce 1. Part- time workers 2. Self-employed/independent contractors 3. Temporary workers 4. On-call workers Why should you care about these types of workers? It means you have options for your career.

  6. III. 21st Century Skills A. Workplace Basics 1. Basic Skills – reading, writing, math, speaking, and listening. 2. Thinking Skills – ability to learn, reason, think creatively, make decisions, and problem solve. 3. Personal Qualities – individual responsibility, self-esteem, self- management, sociability, and integrity.

  7. III. 21st Century Skills (continued) The skills listed on the prior slide refer to those abilities the U.S. Secretary of Labor defines as, “job know how.” In order to learn your job and be a success at it, you must be proficient at those skills.

  8. III. 21st Century Skills (continued) B. Workplace Competencies 1. Resources 2. Interpersonal Skills 3. Information 4. Systems 5. Technology Workplace competencies are the skills workers need to be productive.

  9. III. 21st Century Skills (continued) C. The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) asked U.S. employers what skills their employees need to be successful. They are: 1. Knowing how to learn. 2. Reading, writing, computation. 3. Listening and oral communication. 4. Adaptability. 5. Personal management. 6. Group Effectiveness. 7. Influence.
