Atalanta • Atalanta is known as the pride of the woods Arcady • Two men, Iasus and Schoenius, were called the father of Atalanta • One of these men were disappointed that he had a daughter instead of a son • He thought she was not worthy and was left on a mountainside to die of cold and hunger • A she – bear took her in until some hunters found her and took her to live with them

  3. Atalanta • Later on, two Centaurs, faster and stronger than all mortals, pursued her. • Atalanta stood still and mortally wounded both of them with her bow and arrow • Oeneus’s son, Meleager, fell in love with Atalanta, but she did not want to get married and treated him as a comrade

Atalanta • Atalanta and many great heroes went hunting for a Calydonian boar • The heroes did not want to hunt with a woman, Meleager talked them into letting her help in the hunt • When they surrounded the boar, it attacked and killed two people, but Atalanta wounded the boar • Meleager then stabbed it in the heart

Atalanta • After the hunt she sailed with Jason and the Argonauts • When Pelias died, Atalanta conquered the hero Peleus at the funeral games • After her achievement, she discovered her true parents and lived with them • Atalanta had many suitors and agreed to marry the man that could beat her in a foot race

Atalanta • A young man, Melanian or Hippomenes, had received three golden apples from Aphrodite • He threw each apple in different directions during the race to steer her off the course • He won with the help of Aphrodite and he married Atalanta • They both were turned into lions because of some kind of disrespect to Zeus or Aphrodite • Before that happened Atalanta had a son named Parthenopaeus
