Timetable – Day 1

  • Round 1 4:30 pm
  • Round 2 6:00 pm
  • End of Day 1 8:00 pm

Teams may leave straight after their adjudication for Round 2, you do not need to meet back here.

  • Round 3 Prep 8:30 am
  • Round 3 9:00 am
  • Round 4 Prep 10:30 am
  • Round 4 11:00 am
  • Lunch 12:30 pm
  • Semi-finals 1:30 pm
  • Final 3:30 pm
  • Prize-giving 5:30 pm
  • End of Day 2 6:30 pm

Rooms

  • Gather in this room
  • Toilets
  • Rooms 1-3 are downstairs
  • Rooms 5-10 are upstairs
  • Gym 1 and 2 are upstairs in the Gym

Rules

  • Speaking times are 7 minutes
  • Reply speeches are 4 minutes
  • Reply speech can be given by either 1st or 2nd speaker
  • Points of information allowed between 1 - 6 minutes
  • Must stand, must have permission, must be short, must be a question
  • Accept two, offer as many as you can (not a rule)
  • Only three speakers permitted in the prep-room
  • No squirrels

Adjudication

  • You will be adjudicated by a member of Otago University Debating Society.
  • Speaker scores are given on a 60-80 range.
  • 70 is an average speech for a school student competing in Russell McVeagh.
  • Adjudicators will show speaker scores if requested.
  • Adjudicators are required to gives reasons for their decision, announce a Best Speaker, give you feedback, and answer any questions you have.

Preliminary Rounds

  • Teams will be power-paired
  • We will try to provide the following:
    • An even number of affirmatives and negatives
    • Will not debate a team twice
    • Will not debate own school

Break Rounds

  • Top four teams will advance to semi-finals
  • Teams are ranked firstly by ‘wins’
  • Secondly by total ‘speaker points’
  • Thirdly by ‘win points’
  • Fourthly by ‘random number generator’
  • Winner is decided by elimination
  • Break rounds will have a panel of adjudicators
  • There will also be a call-back debate at the same time as the semi-final

    • Highly Commended (approx. 3 speakers)

    • Development Team (3 speakers)
