Term of the Day Apnea • Temporary absence or cessation of breathing • Hint: “pnea” usually refers to breathing Dyspnea? Eupnea?
Body Directions • Why are they important? • Keep in mind: all anatomical directions and planes of motion are to be taken from the perspective of the anatomical position.
Body Directions The Anatomical Position • Arms at the side • Palms forward • Face forward • Feet parallel • Toes point forward
Body Directions Body Planes • Sagittal • Left and right • Frontal/Coronal • Front and back • Transverse/Horizontal • Top and bottom
Body Directions Interactive Activity: Cross-Sectionally Speaking…
Body Directions Describing Movement • Anterior vs. Posterior • Front vs. Back • Superior vs. Inferior • Top vs. Bottom • Deep vs. Superficial
Body Directions • Distal vs. Proximal • Distant / Proximity • Medial vs. Lateral • Close to midline / Away from midline • Supine vs. Prone • Lay on your spine / Lay on tummy
Body Motions • Flexion vs. Extension vs. Hyperextension • Flexion: decrease in angle size • Extension: increase in angle size • Hyperextension: increasing beyond • Common examples: elbow, wrist, neck • Inversion vs. Eversion • Inversion: move in • Eversion: move away • Common example: ankle
Body Motions • Plantarflexion vs. Dorsiflexion • Plantarflexion: “plant” foot on gas pedal • Dorsiflexion: point up • Common example: foot/ankle • Circumduction • Make circles • Common example: arms, fingers, shoulder
Body Motions • Abduction vs. Adduction • Abduction: away from body • Adduction: closer to the body • Common examples: shoulder, fingers • Supination vs. Pronation • Supination: palms up • Pronation: palms down • Common example: forearm
Body Motions • Rotation • Internal vs. External • Common example: neck • Opposition • Thumb to fingers • Elevation vs. Depression • Elevation: up • Depression: down • Common example: shoulders
Body Motions Interactive Activity: Simon Says!
