GCSEs 1-9 • Students in 2018 were the first cohort to sit all new style GCSEs. • These new GCSEs are graded 9-1 (9 highest). • The courses are all assessed in the summer term as final linear exams Y11. • The intention is that they are more difficult, have no coursework/controlled assessment and, in most cases, only have one tier of entry.

English Language & English Literature • This is a dual-entry award and students receive two separate grades (e.g. 7 and 6) • Students who don’t achieve Grade 4 in either English Language or English Literature will have to re-sit GCSE English until the age of 19
GCSE: The new specifications • The biggest approach change in teaching English for around 30 years. • The two year course will be assessed entirely by end of Y11 exams. • All exams are ‘closed book’ i.e. no novels/play scripts or poetry anthologies are allowed in exams.

English Language Paper 1 Exam = 50% • Section A – Reading 20th or 21st Century fiction unseen texts • Section B – Creative Writing task • Paper 2 Exam = 50% • Section A – Reading 19th / 20th / 21st Century Non – fiction unseen texts • Section B – Non-fiction Writing task
Reading The course should enable students to: • read a wide range of texts, fluently and with good understanding • read critically, and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing
Writing Students should be able to: • write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately • use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately • acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology
Speaking and Listening In addition, students are required to • Listen to and understand spoken language, and use spoken Standard English effectively. • Spoken language will be reported on as part of the qualification, but it will notform part of the final mark and grade.
English Literature • Paper 1 Exam = 40% • Section A – Shakespeare (Romeo & Juliet) • Section B – 19th Century novel (to be decided by the teacher) • Paper 2 Exam = 60% • Section A – 20th Century novel ( to be decided by the teacher) • Section B – Anthology Poetry (Power and Conflict) • Section C – Unseen Poetry
Texts to be studied • All texts are available to download. Copies won’t come home but students will bring home copied extracts to work on; the same length as used in the examinations. • Revision guides are available this evening to purchase, and also at the Parents’ Evening. • Good websites are www.sparknotes.com, www.cliffnotes.com, www.schmoop.com • Additionally, we encourage students to use GCSE Pod and Google Classroom.
Diagnostic Tests • Every half term there will be a Diagnostic Test or Trial examination. • Held in the classroom under formal examination conditions lasting for about an hour, or in full examination conditions for the actual examination time. • Students will be given focused and specific feedback and targets so that they/we/you can track progress, raise issues etc.
Homework • Very structured and focused homework tasks set every week. • Marked as soon as possible, students will respond by ‘Rewind’ writing on the work, identifying their targets for improvement and assessing their progress. • Another, smaller, homework, will also usually be set weekly. • Please help us by prioritising homework!
How parents can help: • Ensure that students do their homework. • Study guides are available for all texts and students can log on to www.sparknotes.com for notes, summaries, quizzes etc. • Google Classroom also has homework tasks set each week, and the school website will have the updated schemes of work for Year 10 and 11. So YOU can always check, what students should be doing each week at home. • The texts themselves are available electronically to download.

2 Tiers: • GCSE Mathematics has a Foundation tier (grades 1 – 5) and a Higher tier (grades 4 – 9). Students must take three question papers at the same tier. • All question papers must be taken in the same series (summer 2019).
Assessments • Students will have regular mini reviews and open book tests. The open book tests aid students in using their exercise books as a revision tool. • All questions are from the exam boards and graded in line with GCSE grade boundaries. • More questions will be based around problem solving techniques.
Calculators • Scientific calculator – Casio FX83 • Currently on sale at Tesco for £5.99.
Homework • We use Mathswatch which is an online support package. • It has short video clips of every topic to help students who need extra support. • Students used the system last year and so should be used to it. • We will also put extra resources on google classroom to support students.
Your Support • Please look at your son/daughters mathswatch account to see how they are progressing. • If you struggle to understand your son/daughter’s homework you can also watch the clips to support them. • Revision material will be set as ongoing tasks.
Our Support • There will be a weekly lunchtime club in the computer suite if your child has any problems with their maths watch homework, or if they wish to extend their knowledge. • There will be tutor time support for students who are struggling with certain areas. • After school drop in clinics for specific support
