  1. Human Services Center CampusYankton, SD Randy Christensen, Supervisor of Vocational Rehabilitation Offices —35 years of service—

  2. 22 Counties in SD MISSION STATEMENT(S) FOR VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION • “Every person that can work, should work.” JOB DEFINES PERSON IN U.S.A. • “To assist individuals with disabilities to obtain employment, economic self-sufficiency, personal independence, and full inclusion into society.”

  3. Mission Statement, HSCTo provide persons who are mentally ill or chemically dependent with effective, individualized professional treatment that enables them to achieve their highest level of personal independence in the most therapeutic environment. http://dhs.sd.gov/

  4. Jesse P. • Has Down Syndrome. • Classmate of mine—YHS 1997. • Works at Fitzgerald Potato Chip Factory, except during a time when his hours were changed… • Functioning in society as well as possible.

  5. Tom J. = Chief Bromden-like • Has an elaborate Delusional System. • Absolutely convinced that EROS Data Center controls his movement and mind. Paranoid Schizophrenia UNCHANGEABLE • Is certain that he is a close, personal friend with Sir Paul McCartney, ex-Beatle. • Sees himself on television often. • Has seen “God” at the YMCA; 100 lamps!? • Works at the Human Services Center in an office, shredding confidential documents. • Has a small recycling business.

  6. Paul McCartney, famous Beatle http://www.silverkgallery.com.au/Robert%20Freeman/Paul%20McCartney%20Portrait%20web.gif

  7. Shawn Cassidy, actor = God? Ashton Kutcher of the 1970s

  8. EROS Data Center EROS Employees: Blake Sunne’s dad Justin/Julie Vermeer’s dad Jake Homer’s dad James Burkman’s dad

  9. Emil S. = Pete Bancini-like • Swung his fist at my dad, because he was certain my dad was sending him back to his physically violent, abusive father, who was definitely dead. Emil S. had been abused 40 years prior to the instance when he was violent toward my father. • Employed as custodian. • Cerebral Palsy

  10. Susan G. (Miss South Dakota) • Was sexually abused as a young girl. • Won “genetic lottery” (beauty, smarts); lost “environmental/family lottery” (dad). • Borderline personality disorder. • Graduate of USD, very intelligent. • Cannot sustain any form of good relationship today; fears abandonment. • Persistent feeling of a major lack (lack of fulfillment) in her life—so stalks/clings. • Constantly “overtests” herself with needles for diabetes—harms herself.

  11. John G. = Charlie Cheswick-like • Schizo-affective disorder. • Graduated Sioux Falls College (USF). • Has written many stories, poems, and books—creative & amusing narratives. • Is extremely paranoid; pro at profanity. • Becomes irrationally angry. • Is a germophobe. • Disallowed his books to be sold online—feared spies/invaders. http://tech-or-blood.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/germs.jpg

  12. Don H. • “Institutionalized” entirely, just like the men in the novel/film. Cheswick, Harding, and others like it better in the hospital, because the hospital is “safer” than society. Has schizophrenia. • “SUPER SENIORS at BVHS” THEORY ? (Buy or Sell this theory of institutionalization?) Schizophrenia = fragmented mind. (like the novel, which is fragmented, too—short sections, sane-insane-sane-insane-sane fragments; “schizophrenically written”) • Electroconvulsive (or shock) therapy • (“EST” in the novel) • Frontal lobotomy—not used any more; made people “calmer” or lethargic or even “zombiefied.” • Marfan’s Syndrome (Abraham Lincoln, too); kicked out of home for being “different” and “deficient.” • Invaded McDonald’s trash bins to eat and subsist.
