  3. 热情的握手 • A warm handshake • A pump handle • Maybe we’ll hold a little pump handle after the ceremony.

  4. 饥荒随时可能降临 • Famine may happen at any time. • Famine might come knocking at the door.

  5. 命运是可以被改变的 • We can change our destiny. • Destiny is not a destination. • A place where destiny was not a destination.

  6. 我们或受制于时代,或改写历史 • We may either be restrained by times, or make a history. • Whether we allow ourselves to be shaped by events and history, or whether we act to shape them.

  7. 新世纪初 • at the beginning of this new century • at the beginning of this young century

  8. 抓住机会 • Take/ seize/grasp an opportunity • get a shot at opportunity • everybody’s got a shot at opportunity

  9. 摒除陋习 • break/kick a habit • slough off a habit • We will have to slough off some bad habits.

  10. 一点一滴地,日积月累地 • Bit by bit/step by step • brick by brick, rail by rail, calloused hand by calloused hand • And yet, brick by brick, rail by rail, calloused hand by calloused hand, people kept dreaming, and building, and working, and marching, and petitioning their government.

  11. 只为挣钱的一生是缺乏雄心的一生 • A life devoted to making money is a life lacking ambition. • Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition.
