Quiz Time • Clear everything off your desk and get ready for your quiz. • When you are done w/ your quiz, turn to page 9 of your reading packet and answer the following questions: • Describe what happened on May 3, 1886 at the McReaper Company in Chicago. • Why did workers assemble themselves together in “unions”? What was the advantage of joining a union? • Identify 3 workers organizations that sprang up at the end of the 19th century?

  5. The Union Movement: • The company hired scabs during a strike and violence erupted between police and strikers. A rally the next day also turned violent, when a bomb went off, killing and wounding protestors. • American workers…feeling victimized, tried to protest and form unions. Unions fought for better rights, benefits and wages for the common man • The Knights of Labor, American Federation of Labor, and the Industrial Workers of the World

  7. A political cartoon is a cartoon that illustrates and provides a commentary on the key political issues of the time.

  8. What is happening in this political cartoon? How is the Chinese and the Irish immigrant depicted? What type of facial features does the artist give them? What commentary do you think the artist is making about immigration in the United States?

  9. With your partner, study Political Cartoon #1-4 and on the same sheet of paper, answer the following questions for EACH cartoon: • Cartoon #1 Why is the ‘political boss’ the tallest? Why is the ‘common American’ dressed that way? • Cartoon #2 Why are the men scrubbing the man’s back? According to p.10, who could that be? • Cartoon #3 What is Uncle Sam doing? Who are the people? • Cartoon #4 Who are the 2 characters eating in the top picture? What changes to last picture?

Political Corruption Key Points: • Big businesses would bribe politicians to pass laws favorable for them • “The Man on the Moon” would smell the corruption in the U.S. because it was so rampant • Presidents of the late 19th century all implicated in some wrong-doing • Gov’t and society very corrupt • “Era of Good Stealings”

The Ugly Truth: Political Cartoon • MAKE A POLITICAL CARTOON BASED ON Pg. 9 or pg. 10 • Start with pencil • Include words or phrases to clarify your cartoon • Color (colors can be symbols too) and outline your cartoon, making sure all words are bold and stand out. It’s for a newspaper! • On the other ½ sheet of paper, write a one paragraph explanation of your cartoon. (in pen or marker)
