  2. What is a Project • Specific, finite task to be accomplished • Traditionally, people view a project as something that produces a physical output • A computer system is an example

  3. What is a Project • Projects can also be viewed as ‘vehicles for change’, the outputs of which may be both tangible and intangible: • physical products • changes to business shape or culture e.g. TQM • improvements in performance or service levels

  4. What is a Project • Usually a one time activity with a well defined set of desired results • It may be divided in to sub-tasks that must be accomplished in order to achieve the project goals

  5. What is Project Management • A clear distinction between project and line management • Line Management: • maintaining existing processes and services • performing within defined roles and jobs • process of continuous refinement and evolution

  6. What is Project Management • Project Management: • is about change • projects tend to be one-offs • have defined time periods with no rehersals • projects require management which can: • adapt to conflicting pressures • adapt to changing requirements • adapt to unfamiliar situations

  7. Why Project Manage • Focus responsibility and authority • Project Manager should: • identify and correct problems at an early date • make timely decisions about trade-offs between conflicting project goals • ensure managers of specific tasks do not optimise the performance of specific tasks at the expense of the total project

  8. Project Network Techniques • For the planning and control of projects with a definable start and finish • Two forms: • AoA - Activity on Arrow • AoN - Activity on Node

  9. PNT - AoN • Given the precedence table, draw an AoN project network highlighting: EST, LST, Duration and Float • Your solution should indicate: • critical path • Total project time (TPT)
