Just Who IS Mrs. Frederickson? • Graduated from the University of Washington (GO DAWGS!) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, minor in Human Rights in 2005 • Received Teacher’s Certification from the University of Washington (GO DAWGS!) in 2006 • Returned to the University of Washington (GO DAWGS!) and received my Master in Education in June, 2012 • Long-time parent and student advocate in the school district • Former personal injury paralegal for over 20 years • Passion for children and life-long learning • Philosophy of teaching the whole child and partnering with families • Enthusiastic, full of humor, love middle school kids!!

  3. Student Behavior Expectations • Be prompt • Be ready to learn when class begins. • Be prepared • Have materials with you and know due dates. • Be a polite and positive participant • Speak in a normal tone of voice, and listen attentively. • Be productive • Turn in work on time, and always do your best. • Be a problem solver • Correct problems quickly and peacefully before they escalate.

  4. Respect • Value yourself. Be honest and ethical, and practice strong moral values. • Treat all members of the school community and all visitors with politeness and respect. • Honor the ideas and opinions of others. • Offer to help. • Be responsible with property and belongings.

  5. Assignment Expectations • All classroom, practice work, and group work is required in order to be successful. Students are allowed three (3) late assignments for credit per semester, using the Late Assignment Form, where students are required to explain why the work is late and what they can do in the future to make sure assignments are turned in on time. Any work turned in after one (1) week without a Late Assignment Form will receive a zero. Students who are chronically late with work will receive a Late Work Notice which must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned the next day. • Students are encouraged to rework problems missed (“redo”) on a test or quiz. Learning is reinforced when students rework problems to discover and correct their errors.

  6. Policies • Food, beverages and gum are not allowed in the classroom. • Please be in your seat when the bell rings, as class begins at that time. • It is expected that each student will complete all class work and “at home practice.” • Absences • Refer to the class agenda upon return and gather distributed papers, view the Teacher Calendar online, and ask a classmate about assignments. • Clarify with teacher. • Each excused absence has a one-day grace period.

  7. Student Responsibility for Coursework • Bring binder, math textbook, Interactive Notebook and all necessary materials to class. • Attend class on a regular basis. • Know due dates, and submit all assignments on time. • Refer to assignments listed on the whiteboard and the Teacher Calendar online.

  9. Class work and “At Home Practice” • Class work not completed during class is expected to be completed at home for homework and turned in the next day • “Rock ‘n Roll Reviews” are our weekly practice sheets – reinforces skills and concepts that students continue to struggle with, in order to “saturate” them in mathematics – skills, concepts, vocabulary, and application to everyday life • Homework is our “at home practice” … practice is how we increase our understanding of mathematics and master our skills, much like athletes, musicians and gamers!

  10. Formative and SummativeAssessments Formative Assessments • Exit Tickets • Whole group whiteboard activities • Quick Quizzes/Lesson Quizzes • “Helicopter” Summative Assessments • Ready to Go On? Quizzes • Unit Assessments/Chapter Tests

  12. 1st Semester Learning Outcomes September Chapter 1 – Algebraic Reasoning This chapter focuses on order of operations, properties of numbers, understanding variables and solving algebraic expressions, translating words into math, and simplifying algebraic expressions October Chapter 2 – Integers and Rational Numbers This chapter focuses on operations with integers, solving two-step algebraic equations, equivalent fractions and decimals, and comparing and ordering rational numbers November/December Chapter 3 – Applying Rational Numbers This chapter focuses on operations with positive and negative decimals, and operations with positive and negative fractions January Chapter 4 – Proportional Relationships This chapter focuses on rates and unit rates, identifying, writing and solving proportions, and scale drawings and similar figures

  13. Academic Interventions • I advise students at the beginning of the week which days I’m available after school for additional help from 2:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. • Students who stay after school MUST fill out a Study Club “To Do” list – this helps me know what they need to work on and helps them stay accountable

  14. Measure of Student Progress (MSP) and Common Core State Standards • Measurements of Students Progress (MSP)The name of the MSP, given to students in grades 3-8, conveys the goal of the test: to measure student progress. Students will take the MSP this spring, 2014. • Beginning in the spring of 2015 students will be required to take the Common Core State Standards assessment.

  15. Discipline/Behavior Issues • It is my hope that discipline and behavior issues will not be a major factor. However, in the event it is necessary for me to address certain behaviors, such as a student interfering with another’s learning, Evergreen has a standard management system as follows: • first warning is verbal • second warning is verbal with redirection • third warning is verbal and student is moved to another area of the room • If the student continues to be disruptive he/she is sent to a Buddy Classroom where a Plan of Improvement will need to be completed and approved before returning to his/her original classroom. This Plan of Improvement will become a permanent record in the student’s file, and parents will be notified • ANY actions that create an unsafe environment, or if behaviors are repetitive, will be referred to an administrator
