  4. Purpose of Myths • Best way to die • Explain phenomena in the world (mountains, earthquakes, etc.) • Legitimize certain groups of people • Give reasons for ritual and direction and reason for life • Enforce social behaviors • Socializing children • Lay down rules • Precedent for law

  5. Myth Traits • Not Realistic – Supernatural (Magic, Gods, Goddesses, Talking animals etc.) • Extraordinary characters doing extraordinary things • In a world that is not our ordinary waking reality • Support a sense of communion and belonging with society • Set in immeasurable time

Myth Traits • Great suffering lasting for eons • Most end in tragedy • Significant for their cultures • Borrowed, told, and retold – live again in fresh imaginings • Of cultural beginnings of how people’s lives and ways of thinking came to be • Help shape how people understand themselves and the world • Usually teach something – Moral lesson
