  4. 1732-1809 • Left home at 8 to become a choir boy in Vienna • Composed for the rich and noble • Composer, conductor, coach, instrument repair, music librarian, servant • Good friends with Mozart • Wrote 104 symphonies, 68 string quartets, piano sonatas, piano trios, concertos, operas, and masses • Hated the composition “rules” • Famous work: Surprise Symphony Franz Joseph Haydn

  5. 1756-1791 • Musical prodigy • On tour from ages 6-15 • Died at age 35 from rheumatic fever leaving his requiem unfinished (Mass for the dead) • Influenced by Bach and Haydn • Wrote in all forms • Composed quickly (3 symphonies in 6 weeks) • Liked mysterious harmonies that created dark moods • Famous work: EineKleineNachtmusik Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  6. 1770-1827 • Pianist and perfectionist (took a long time to compose) • First signs of deafness at age 29 • Wrote 9 symphonies, piano concertos and sonatas, string quartets, 1 opera, and 2 masses • 3 periods in his life • Early – influenced by music of Haydn and Mozart • Middle – longer and more heroic works • Late – Harsh, “modern,” new concepts • Bridge to the Romantic period • Famous work: Symphony No. 5; Symphony No. 9 Ludwig van Beethoven

Symphony No. 5 • Identify the motif in movement 1 • Listen and tally the number of times you hear the motif • Question for discussion: If Beethoven used the same motif numerous times during the piece, how did he use the elements of music to keep it interesting? • Red Lilly • Compose a short poem about “Red Lilly” and use the same rhythmic motif found in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 Activity
