  2. Inspect the vehicle. Check tire tread depth and pressures. The correct inflation pressure is listed on the driver's door jamb and in the owner's manual. Also check the oil and coolant levels.

  3. Do not drive the car if it's overheating, or if any fluids are leaking. Keep the windows clean. Bring a bottle of window cleaner and paper towels to ensure that windows and lights are clear at all times.

  4. Pack an emergency kit. Be prepared for unexpected breakdowns with gloves, a flashlight, and some basic hand tools. Secure all luggage. The best place for cargo is in the trunk.

  5. Pack snacks and a cooler with cold drinks. Avoid foods that melt or are messy. Have cash on hand. Keep some small bills and change on hand to pay for parking and tolls. Bring your own music. Radio reception can come and go on the open highway. Rest often. When tired, pull over to a safe area and take a nap. Coffee or energy drinks are not a substitute for getting proper rest.

  6. Bring a GPS navigation system. A portable navigation system will help you re-route if you encounter construction or get lost. It can also help you locate fuel, food, and other essential services. Know the route. Look online before you start to find landmarks and "must-see" destinations. Following these simple long-distance driving tips will increase safety, allow you to maximize your time on the road, and make your trip more enjoyable.
