  2. Complex Sentence • Contains one independent clause • Contains at least one subordinate clause

  3. Examples of Complex Sentences • When I hear classical music, I think of the Madrid Middle School band. • Mrs. Aguayo, who used to teach at Payne School, is in Room 22. • Joseph did not play soccer yesterday because he sprained his ankle in practice.

  4. Compound-Complex Sentence • Contains two or more independent clauses • Contains at least one subordinate clause • Basically, it is a compound sentence with a subordinate clause

  5. Examples of Compound-complex Sentences • The prairie dog stood watch because the pups were playing, and it did not want anything to happen to the pups. • Whenever we go on vacation, our neighbors mow our lawn, and they collect our mail.

  6. Complex or Compound-Complex? • The teacher does not have the book that we need for the book club, so let’s go to the El Monte Public Library.
