  1. Common Suffixes

  2. A suffix is a part-word added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

  3. These four may be added to a word to mean the person or thing that does the action suggested by the word.

  4. -ist art > artist

  5. -er paint > painter

  6. -or act > actor

  7. -ant serve > servant

  8. These five can change a verb into a noun closely related to the verb.

  9. -ment agree > agreement

  10. -age marry > marriage

  11. -tion protect > protection

  12. -sion invade > invasion

  13. -ing I like to read > I like reading

  14. This suffix can change some nouns into adjectives,

  15. -fulcare > careful wonder > wonderful

  16. -lesscare > careless

  17. -estsmall > smallestlong > longestshort > shortest

  18. -erfast > fastershort >shorter

  19. and this one can change some adjectives into nouns.-ness willing > willingness
