    2. Suffixes So, what is a suffix and what does it do? It’s a word part that builds words—this is true. So how can a suffix build words for me? Add it to the end of a word---watch and see.

    4. Rule #1 For most words, the suffix is just added to the end of the word Bed---beds Fast---faster Help---helpful

    5. Rule #2 For words ending in silent e, drop the final e before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel---a, e, i, o, u, y Have---having Move----mover Love---loved

    6. Rule #3 For words ending in one vowel and one consonant, double the consonant before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel—a, e, i, o, u, y Hop---hopped Big---biggest

    7. Rule #4 For words ending in consonant—y, change the y to i before adding any suffix, except –ing. Try---tried Fry---frying

    8. Word Study Activity: Read your independent reading book for a minimum of 20 min. Engage by using a double column entry graphic organizer to identify words with suffixes or words that suffixes could be added. If a word has a suffix, write that word down, and then write the root word in the opposite column If a word could have a suffix added to create a new word, write that word, and then write the word with a suffix in the opposite column.
