  2. Chemical Contraception: What is it? • A type of substance that does one of the following to the body: • Suppresses ovulation • Thickens the cervical mucous • Thins the lining of the uterine wall

  3. Types of Chemical Contraceptives • Birth Control Pills: • Oral pill taken daily • Contains estrogen and/or progestin • If taken correctly, can be 99% effective

  4. Benefits Lighter menstrual cycles with less cramping Can be used to treat acne Can be used to treat menstrual problems Over 40 yrs of research has proven long-term safety Risks Does not protect against STI’s May cause nausea, breast tenderness, weight gain, and irregular spotting Not recommended for women over age 35 who smoke Birth Control Pills
