What is the difference between tester and QA?

Many who have heard about testing and QA think both to be the same, where as both are totally different. Testing has witnessed tremendous improvements in the past years. QA however was not present as a function for the past few years. Development was primarily based on the Waterfall model wherein testers had the responsibility of testing the finished code on an untimely basis. Testers would be following the same business scenarios put forward by the businesses which have been interpreted by developers.

  1. Nowadays however QA professionals have much more responsibilities than following a step-by-step script or ticking a box. We cannot consider testers and QA professionals on the same path which would be undermining the skills and mindset required for performing the duties of a QA professional. Much more than a tester, a QA professional is the one who is responsible for the reliability of the production codebase and assuring the provider about the smooth running of applications as well as platforms that are released by the department without compromising the business. A QA professional unlike a tester has to be involved from the initial phase itself whenever a client approaches the company with a technology that they would like to see implemented and thereby becoming a big asset for the whole of development team. QA professionals will analyze and prevent any defects from occurring and identify the viable approach that has to be followed in the software development. If a manual QA considers exploratory testing as a key skill in their profession, robust automation has to be performed by QA professional in helping manual QAs to get rid of the repetitive testing. QA professionals would also have adequate knowledge of automated testing. QA professionals however are not bound by the presence of any tools for test management or documentation as for the testers. Agile methodologies are implemented along with shorter SDLCs, which mean each functionality proceeds quickly within the shortest span along with shorter feedback loops. QA is more of preventing the faults from taking place by the inspection and testing of the process. Where as a tester will inspect and test the products for the detection of faults. For testers, the main objective would be about whether the functional metrics and requirements such as clicks- per-action, computational performance, user throughput and defect rates

QA professionals on the other hand have to come to a conclusion on whether the customers are going to be happy with this product or whether the objective is achieved etc. Three main functionalities of a QA professional include assuring an enhanced customer experience. They would be also active throughout the product lifecycle from the beginning of the project till the final implementation phase. Furthermore, continuously analyzing and improving the processes as well as product. The duties and responsibilities are definitely different compared to testers whose job includes determining of the bugs in the software before the user finds it and examining the code modules. Testers are generally active during the final stages of a coding cycle. QA professionals would be Janbask – Real Time IT Training is an online IT company, having team of experts offering Online Training in SQL, Java J2EE training, Online QA Training and many more.
