  2. MSLs • Are not for student data, but teacher growth data • Are not formative assessment • Are a common measure

  3. MSL info from DPI • Only one sample question per grade level will be released this year. • 80 minute test/ 10 min for directions • Scored locally • Require students to analyze primary documents and summarize texts.

  4. MSL details • SS HS tests will have 24 MC questions and 6 CR questions. (except US history) • MS has slightly different numbers. • New specifications will be posted at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/effectiveness-model/measures/

  5. Alignment of RBT and MSL items • Make sure your content matches the Essential Standard. • Cognitive level of lesson matches the cognitive requirement of the objective • If yes to both, then you have a well aligned test question.

  6. Constructed Response Questions • Incorporate more of these on unit or chapter tests by replacing some of the MC questions with CR questions. • Do not have to write a 4-5 paragraph essay.

CR quality check questions • 1.  Does the response begin with a statement of the student’s position or answer? • 2.  Does the response include at least one example from the text to support the position or answer? • 3.  Does the response include an explanation of how the quoted part of the text relates to the position or answer? • 4.  Does the response make sense?  Does it ramble or does it move easily from one point being made to the next?

Building Multiple Choice Questions • You have to go back to the Essential Standards and Blooms Revised Taxonomy to write valid sample questions. • 8C&G.1.1 Summarize democratic ideals expressed in local, state and national government (e.g. limited government, popular sovereignty, separation of powers, republicanism, federalism, and individual rights • What’s important to pay attention to here?

  15. A little tougher here…. • 6th grade example: Code of Hammurabi  ”If any one is caught committing a robbery and is caught, then he shall be put to death.” N.C. General Statue § 14-87. Robbery with firearms or other dangerous weapons. (a) Any person or persons who unlawfully takes or attempts to take personal property from another or from any place of business, residence or banking institution or any other place, shall be guilty of felony (more than 1 year in jail if convicted). (modified) Why do Civilizations need laws? Identify one similarity and one difference.

  17. European exploration connected many cultures together. Identify one country that sent out explorers. Explain onemotivating factor for that country to send out explorers and describe one effect of European exploration.

  19. 7.H.2.2 • Following the 9/11 attacks in the US, Washington put North Korea on the "axis of evil" list and has since contended that North Korea's possession of nuclear weapons poses a serious threat to the world. Several times, the US administration proposed bringing North Korea before the UN Security Council to impose economic sanctions. However China, North Korea's main ally and trading partner, indicated that it would likely veto any sanctions on Pyongyang. • Following North Korea's nuclear test in October 2006, Security Council members imposed sanctions on Pyongyang. The "targeted" sanctions include an embargo on military and technological materials and luxury goods, as well as a set of financial sanctions. A month after the Council adopted the US-backed sanctions, North Korea agreed to return to the Six-Party Talks. (Global Policy Forum, 2006) • After Reading the passage give one example of unity among nations and one example of unilateral action. Evaluate the international community's response to the North Korean threat.
