  4. Drill Some reasons to say no are: Drugs rearrange people’s lives Legality Possibility of addiction Destroys brain cells Decision ruins your future Some alternatives to doing drugs are: Sports Hobbies Community Activities School organizations (clubs) 2

Vocabulary Drug-free-school zones- areas within 1000 feet of schools designated by signs, within which people caught selling drugs receive especially severe penalties Drug watches- organized community efforts by neighborhood residents to patrol, monitor, report, and otherwise stop drug deals and drug abuse Rehabilitation- process of medical and psychological treatment for physiological or psychological dependence on a drug or alcohol 3

  7. Committing to be drug free If your friends put pressure on you to do drugs, you may need to decide whether you want to continue to remain friends with someone who uses drugs Avoid people who do drugs Avoid places where drugs are available 5

  8. Refusal Statements “No thanks, I don’t do drugs.” “I can’t, I’m on medication.” “I’m not interested, that stuff makes me sick.” “No. I have to be in great shape for tomorrows game.” 6

  9. Drug Prevention by Schools Drug-free-school zones are established Penalties are doubled in these zones Expulsion of students who use drugs because of the zero tolerance policy Locker and car searches can be conducted 7

Healthy Alternatives Choosing friends who have a drug free lifestyle can help make one less likely to use drugs Choosing activities that have a drug free involvement can also help make one less likely to use drugs Some healthy alternatives to drugs are: Hobbies- photography, cooking, art, or music Sports- get physical activity through outdoor recreation Community activities- neighborhood events, community service, volunteering School organizations- clubs, honor societies, service groups Schools and communities can provide ways to help or avoid drugs 9

  12. Getting Help Types of Treatment: Outpatient drug-free treatment Programs that usually do not include medications and use group or individual counseling. Short-term treatment Centers that can include residential therapy, medication therapy, and outpatient therapy Maintenance therapy Intended for heroin addicts, this treatment usually includes medication therapy Therapeutic communities Residencies for drug abusers. These centers include highly structured programs that can last from six to twelve months 10

Getting Help Drug abuse is a TREATABLE condition Drug treatment centers offer a safe place to withdraw from drug abuse Drugs effect the brain, therefore, addiction is difficult and long Most addictions cannot be overcome without support The goal of all drug treat programs is to help the person battle both the drug dependency and the reasons why the drug abuse started 11

Becoming Drug-Free Following these steps can guide you with helping somebody with an addiction: Identify sources of help in your community Talk to the person when he/she is sober, and express your concern about the person’s behavior and denial Offer to go with the person to a counselor or support group 12

  15. Effect on Family and Friends 13 • The first thing you will lose when you do drugs is trust from your family and friends • Drug addicts also at risk of physically hurting their family members or hurting themselves
