  1. MLTI: One-one learning @PPS • Instructional goals (ROI) • Complete costs • Alternative costs • Local circumstances

  2. Instructional Goals (Sample) • Authentic and challenging student learning experiences … • Evolution of a culture that connects learning beyond the school walls to community and global resources. • Preparation of learners for a world immersed in technology.

  3. MLTI: Total Costs (above $242) • Staffing • Technical and Instruction support • This need pre-dates MLTI, is necessary with/without laptops • 2 positions in budget this year • Training • Scheduled sessions, one-one, and on-line (set priorities, no new $)

  4. MLTI: Total Costs (above $242) • Facilities • Wireless networks (State provided… no additional cost) • Electricity (can be minimized w’ home charging, etc.) • Space (storage, management, security) Rooms identified, will need new procedures and time…

  5. MLTI: Total Costs (above $242) • Network services • Server capacity • Printing (manageable) • Bandwidth (adequate: no new $) • Wireless security (already set up through E-Rate) • Technical support (more laptop help, less older hardware support)

  6. MLTI: Total Costs (w’o program) • Student use computers • Most more than eight years old • Cost to replace, $2-400K per year • Wireless • Portland high would be $80,000. (All three high schools would get state installed system) • Project management (CTS staff)

  7. MLTI: Local Circumstances • PPS has struggled to provide computer access for high school students. Our computers are mostly older donations. Even with steady funding, it would take several years to catch up. • PPS has been unable to establish a computer replacement cycle.

  8. MLTI: Local Circumstances • The wireless networks are non-existent at Portland High School, Limited at DHS,PATHS. Work is not budgeted for FY 2010 • District-wide, there is a several-year backlog of wireless projects.

  9. MLTI: Cost/benefits • MLTI costs are substantial, but the program solves major problems: • Gets the students’ computers on par with the surrounding schools quickly • Installs robust wireless networks • Provides planning and direction for new teaching and learning.

  10. MLTI: One-one learning @PPS Thank you!
