  1. Findings from hindcast runs 04/30-05/21, 2002

  2. List of runs 2002-Week19 (05/07-05/14)

  3. Results • Generally a large discrepancy is observed between the two grids. • Salinity from the new grid is larger in the plume area and bends more towards north. • Salinities inside the estuary are also significantly different. • This discrepancy was thought to be the results of the bathymetry for the new grid, which was interpolated for the old grid by Joseph. • To understand more about this, we went back one week and compared two cold started runs associated with the two grids.

  4. List of runs Week18 (04/30-05/07)

  5. Comparison between RUN3 and 4 • Temperatures are close to each other due to the cold start. (e.g. OGI01) run3-run4, run3, run4 (e.g p24c4) run3-run4, run3, run4 • Elevations and velocity magnitudes are generally close to each other, but the results from the original grid exhibit some instability towards the end of the week (e.g., OGI01).run1-run3, run3-run4, run3, run4, (data) (e.g., p24c4) run3, run4, run3-run4 (offshore animations) run3, run4 (magnitude animations) run3, run4

  6. Comparison between RUN3 and 4 (salinity) • Salinities inside the estuary are still different, with the results from the new grid seem to be less influenced by the discharge (and more stable; e.g., RED26) run3, run4, run3-run4. • Salinity from the new grid in the plume region is again larger and bends more towards north (5 m sal) run3run4. (Plume min) run1, run3 (e.g. OGI01) run3, run4, run3-run4 (e.g. nf2c5) run3, run4, run3-run4 (e.g. nf2c4) run3, run4, run3-run4 (e.g. nf2c3) run3, run4, run3-run4 (e.g p24c4) run3, run4, run3-run4

  7. Remarks • Refining the grid in the plume region seemed to have improved the results, although the southward penetration of the plume is still exaggerated (needs to go to the next week and compare with data in order to be sure).
