Pacific Energy and Gender Network (PEG) • Established in 2005 through a regional strategic planning • Goal : Gender equity in all aspects of energy development • Core members are the Energy Officials from each PICs • Members include individuals and organizations • Secretariat – SOPAC now to SPC

  3. Past Activities • Since 2005 – D-group for networking. http://www.dgroups.org/groups/cta/PEG • PEG Database • Collaborations CTA/ENERIGA/UNDP - translated pamphlets and posters • Capacity Building • Awareness raising materials . E.g DVDs ,

  4. Current Activities • PEG website: www.pacificenergygender.org • Expanded network – micro financing institutions • PEG Newsletter & Fund Raising • Current activities in implementing the PEGSAP 2009 • 2014-

  5. Gender and Energy • Gender mainstreaming into energy project and • integrating gender into project planning and implementation • Some reports have also highlighted failure of energy projects that did not include gender

Challenges Weak monitoring and evaluation processes Limited capacity and capability Weak partnerships/lack of co-ordinations (regional and national level) Limited financial opportunities and funding Community unwillingness to involve women Reluctance of women to get involved in energy projects

  7. Opportunities • PEG Strategic Action Plan 2009 – 2015 • PEG is a member of ENERGIA • Training Manuals available • Awareness raising materials on energy • Collaborations with other developmental partners

PEG activities 2009 - 2010 In collaboration with IUCN and ENERGIA, PEG implemented a project on Gender Mainstreaming in IUCN ORO (Oceanic Regional Office) Energy Projects in 5 countries; Palau, Samoa, Tonga,Tuvalu, Vanuatu Gender action plans were integrated into the main projects Training and Capacity Building for the energy project managers and stakeholders

  9. Way Forward Implementation of PEG Strategic Action plans 2009 – 2014 Promote gender mainstreaming Sharing of information Seek fundings for gender training Develop collaboration with developmental partners and countries
