Workshop outcomes By the end of this session you will have had the opportunity to: • Experienced and discuss the theory of Mindful Mindsets (Mind2) • Examine the principles of Dweck’s Mindset theory • Explore some of your learners’ Mindsets within your discipline/context • Identify ways of supporting mindset awareness to actively encourage your learners to develop more of a Growth Mindset

Let’s get into the ‘learning moment’… • Watch the video clip • Working in pairs, take it in turn to copy the activity using your hands on a flat surface • Build up as much speed as possible • We’ll be coming round to observe and mark each of you for speed and accuracy • https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oQIf5gObYLE

  7. How did that learning activity feel? Capture your reactions to this learning activity using the Mindset Reactionnaire • How did you find that activity? • Which of the statements reflect your approach and reactions to the task? • Do any of these surprise you?

  8. How do Mindsets appear in your learners’ behaviour?

Planning for points of practice: a cycle of active learning, assessment and feedback for a Growth Mindset Use feedback to reflect on what was learned from errors Active learning in the teaching session Formative assessment in the session/immediately after/after practice Summative assessment improved outcomes More effective learning processes to take forward into next stage of learning Teacher: reminders that it takes practice/you can develop some more Student: What do I understand now? What don’t I understand YET? Identify steps for practice More opportunities to practice and get feedback, x∞

Activity 3: Encouraging a Growth Mindset through supported ‘failure’ • How would you create specific, supported opportunities for learners to fail throughout the learning process? • Use the Planned Points of Practice (P3) approach to: • identify formative assessment points • show how you could support your learners in engaging with ‘failure’

  15. The Mindful Mindset • Supports the development of Growth Mindsets • Should be used alongside an active learning approach • Applies to any instance of learning • Incorporates mindfulness activities: Stop, Scan, Hold, Relax, Change

  16. The Mindful Mindset: Theory • Role of awareness • Learning is a whole person process • Learning is a relational process • We can empower ourselves to have a choice • M2 is a practice • M2 is an authentic practice – you have to model it!
