  1. The Tongue Proverbs 18:21 First in a Series: Themes from Proverbs July 27, 2014

  2. Our Summer Series

  3. “Sticks and stones may break my bones…”

  4. Proverbs 18:21 - “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” “a fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” Prov. 29:11 “How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire.” James 3:5 “Peace be with you” (Jn. 20:19,21,26) Three things we can say from Proverbs about the tongue: • Your words have moral status • Your words have emotional power • Your words have practical limitations

  5. 1. Words have moral status Proverbs 20:15 – There is gold and abundance of costly stones, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. • Your words have moral status in the sight of God. Proverbs 12:22 – “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.” Proverbs 17:4 - An evildoer listens to wicked lips, and a liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue. • Listening to gossip is also a moral issue as it relates to our words.

  6. Proverbs 18:8 - The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body. Proverbs 31:8-9 - Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. • When an unkind word is spoken and not confronted, a reputation is harmed.

  7. 2. Our words have emotional power Our key verse – “death and life are in the power of the tongue” Prov. 18:21 Proverbs 12:18a - “There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts…” • We model in the home what we expect our children to do in the community. • What you permit, you promote. Proverbs 12:18b - “The tongue of the wise brings healing.” • The tongue of the wise cares more about soothing an injury than winning an argument.

  8. “The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. (Rom. 8:16) • Accepted, beloved, cherished children of God! Proverbs 12:25 - “Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” “The Christian needs another Christian who speaks God’s word to him…The Christ in his own heart is weaker than the Christ in the word of his brother; his own heart is uncertain, his brother is sure.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer Your words have emotional power for death or for life by the Holy Spirit.

  9. 3. Our Words: Practical Limitations Proverbs 14:23 - In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty. • Do what you say you will do. Proverbs 13:3 - Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. • At the cross you and I find true “freedom of speech.” Three Responses: • Thanks, so here I go! • What’s the use! • Believe the gospel!

  10. 1 Peter 1:23-25 - since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever." And this word is the good news that was preached to you. • His Word will go deeper into you, and your words will spread new life to many other people, and your words will have eternal impact.
