  1. THE TONGUE Lesson 1 Out of the Abundance of the Heart

  2. Introduction • Solomon said, “For every thing there is a season, and a time for every purpose, under heaven… a time to keep silence, and a time to speak…” • Our difficulty is in knowing when the time is to be silent and when the time is to speak.

  3. Introduction (cont.) Scriptures abound with warnings about our tongues: a. Prov. 29:11; Eccl. 5:3; Eccl. 10:14 b. Prov. 26:20; 16:28 c. Prov. 25:11; 15:1 d. Phil. 2:14; I Cor. 10:10 e. James 1:19, 26 f. Matt. 12:36, 37 – A Stern Warning

  4. Introduction (cont.) • For the next few weeks we will be studying about THE TONGUE. Our lessons will include: Lying, Cursing and Blasphemy, Vulgarity, Swearing, Murmuring, Busybodies, Gossip-Slander-Backbiting, Judging, and “How to Handle Bad Talk Aimed at Yourself or Others.” We will have 11 class sessions to accomplish this goal.

  5. The Heart – Center of Our Problems • What is the Heart? God’s definition: 1. That which thinks (Gen. 6:5; Matt. 15:19, Prov. 23:7a) 2. That which reasons (Mark 2:8) 3. That which meditates (Psalms 19:14) 4. That which understands (Matt. 13:15) 5. These are only a few of the many things attributed to the Bible heart.

  6. The Heart – Center of Our Problems Our Conclusion This Lesson • The Bible heart is not the blood pump, but the human mind, which thinks, reason, meditates and comprehends. • This lesson, then concerns the conditioning of our hearts so that proper thoughts and words may come forth.

  7. The Heart – Center of Our Problems • Matt. 12:34 • Luke 6:39-45 • Our heart is not intended to be a vacuum. Something will go into it. Attitudes will come forth. Our choices: 1. Some data we will not be able to control. Some we will. 2. The common factor among those who chose to be proper in their attitude and those who do not, is not so much in the data as it is in our attitude toward that data.

  8. The Heart – Center of Our Problems 3. I may choose a positive attitude by looking on the bright side (Phil. 4:8) 4. Or, I may choose a negative attitude by looking for bad in things. 5. The proper Biblical attitude, of course is number 3.

  9. Some Attitudes of Heart Which Prompt Wicked Language • Failure to forgive (Matt. 18:21-24; Eph. 4:31,32) • Envy/Jealousy (James 3:14,15; Prov. 27:4) • Ingratitude (Ex. 15:24; I Cor. 10:10; Phil 2:14) • Hypercritical (Placing worse possible interpretation on words/actions of others) (Matt. 7:1,2; I Tim. 6:4) • Unhappiness with life (I Tim 6:6-8)

  10. Some Attitudes of Heart Which Prompt Wicked Language F. Pride (Prov. 21:4; Mark 7:21-27, III John 9,10) G. Lack of Faith (Num. 16:12-14; Heb. 3:7-12) H. Fear (Rev. 21:8, Matt. 25:25,30; Ex. 3:11,13; 4:1-10 I. Worry (Matt. 6:25,31,34) J. Hatred (Prov. 10:18; Ps. 109:3; Prov. 26:24,28) K. Impatience (Heb. 12:1,2; I Pet. 2:1-3; Eph. 4:2) L. Prejudice (Matt 13:15; Jn. 1:46, Gal. 2:11ff)

  11. Overcoming and Changing a Wicked Heart A. Be aware of your problem. B. Repent – determine to conquer it (Acts 8:22) C. Confess it – to God and brethren ( I Jn. 1:9,10; James 5:16) D. Come to hate that attitude (Ps. 119:104) E. Study and Meditate on God’s word about this problem (Ps. 119:97) F. Ask friends to point it out when they see you falling back into this habit (Gal 6:1,2)

  12. Overcoming and Changing a Wicked Heart • Avoid people who have this same problem (I Cor. 15:33) if you feel you will be encouraged to fall back into that attitude. • Rebuke those who entice you or who are doing this thing.

  13. Conclusion • Truly, out of the abundance of the heart our mouths speak. If we could just take care of things inside of us, our tongues would not get out of control. • In our next lessons we will look at some of the effects of these wicked attitudes.
