Marriage and the Family • B) Approval of divorce • Great suffering can be caused for people who no longer love each other being forced to stay together • Children’s interests are the most important, if they are harmed by an unhappy marriage then divorce should be possible • In St Matthew’s Gospel divorce on grounds of adultery is allowed • Disapproval of divorce • Jesus banned divorce in other Gospels • Marriage is a sacrament which cannot be broken • People are married in God’s sight, that covenant cannot be broken and so divorce cannot happen according to God’s law • Other approaches are possible if valid

Marriage and the Family • C Explain why family life is important for Christians(8marks) • The family is the basic unit of society and the best place for children to be brought up • The Bible has many references to the importance of family life e.g Honour your father and mother • Raising a Christian family is a major part of the marriage service • The family is where children learn morals from • The family is where children are introduced to the faith through Baptism/ church/Sunday school. • Other approaches are valid

Marriage and the Family • D) No Christian should be homosexual 6 marks • Agree: Biblical teachings against homosexuality e.g Leviticus • Sex is for procreation which is impossible for homosexual sex • The teachings of certain churches e.g Evangelicals • Disagree: Love is more important than religious teachings • RC accept homosexual orientation but call those people to a life of celibacy • Christian teachings allowing homosexuality in certain circumstances

Marriage and the Family • B) Do you think it is right to use contraception? 4 marks • Yes • Contraception can improve women’s health and raises the standard of living • Nothing in the Bible forbids the use of contraception • Contraception is a gift of science from God • Some churches have declared it legitimate to limit family size and prevent social evils of poverty • No • Several Popes condemned artificial contraception • Natural family planning is the only approved form of contraception • The Catechism does not allow artificial contraception • Artificial birth control separates the unitive and creative aspects of sex which is not what God intended • Other approaches are possible

Marriage and the Family • C) Explain why some Christians allow divorce and some do not (8marks) • RC does not allow divorce because Jesus taught it was wrong • Marriage is a sacrament • The covenant made in God’s eyes cannot be broken • Non Catholic Christians allow divorce on the grounds of adultery • Forgiveness and a new chance are the heart of christian teachings, if people are determined to make a new marriage work they should be given the chance. • If the marriage has broken down and it is the lesser of 2 evils then they should be allowed a divorce if staying together would cause more suffering than splitting up.
