  1. Marriage and the family Lesson Objectives: For all students to use a concept map to consider what a family is. For most students to understand how family life has changed For some students to consider the effect of these changes.

  2. Concept Mapping 1. First reject the idea of an outline, or of paragraphs using sentences. 3.Write down the most important word or symbol for the centre. 2.Think in terms of key words or symbolsthat represent ideas and words. 4. Put other important concepts using images and words outside the circle 8.Erase, edit, and/or shorten words to key ideas How do I map? 6.Relocate important items closer to each other for better organization 7.Link concepts to clarify their relationships If possible, use colour to organize information

Concept Mapping Concept Mapping Example of a concept map: • Task 1: Create a simple concept map about your understanding of ‘Family’ • Think about: • What a family is? • Who a family is? • What roles do people play in a family? • What activities do families do? • Your concept map may have no more than 5 words on it. • Try to use images, symbols, links, and organise it so that it shows the information clearly. Goldilocks and the Three Bears Task 2: Compare your concept map with the others on your table, what are the similarities and differences?

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Why? Extension task: Who might disagree with you? Why?
