  1. Customary Units of MeasurementDecember 11,2013 • Common Core Standards • CCSS.Math.Content.5.MD.A.1 Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system • Homework • Pg 530, 9 to 31 (composite numbers)

  2. Be specific with units/labels • Here is the reason A Mars probe crashed due to a simple math error. The navigation team used the metric system of millimeters and meters in their calculations while the engineers sent out the data in the English system of inches, feet and pounds. This mathematical error caused the crash of the probe

  3. Cost for the error!! • NASA spent approximately US$94 million to build the Orbiter.

  4. Different measurement • Customary • Metric

  5. Customary units • Length • Volume • Mass 1 cup =8 fluid ounces

  6. Equivalent Measures (Guided Practice)

  7. Guided Practice(Compute with measures)

  8. Word problem

  9. Independent Practice

  10. Independent Practice

  11. Closure • Always label your answers • For computing you may change into same units.
