  2. Setting the Stage • Amid the weak central governments in feudal Europe • The Church will emerge as a powerful institution

  3. Church Authority • In theory the relationship between church and state was supposed to be a two sided arrangement • The church (pope) was in charge of religious matters

  4. Church Structure • The Church structure consisted of different ranks of religious officials • The pope headed the Church in Rome • For most people local priests served as the main contact with the Church

  5. During an age of warfare the church was a stable force • Religion at this time was center stage to the lives of nearly everyone in Europe

  6. Church Justice • The scope of the Church’s authority was both religious and political • This was a law of the Church on matters such as marriage and religious practices

  7. Church Justice • On larger matters, popes used the threat of excommunication or interdict • Interdict: a prohibition of religious sacraments

  8. Church vs. Kings • Kings began a process called lay investiture • A process in which Kings and nobles appointed church officials

  9. Church vs. Kings • As a result several kings were excommunicated
