    1. Neuromuscular Energising Therapy An Assessment and Treatment Modality Synthesizing Neurological And Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Charlie King MCSP Key Founder of NET

    2. Programme Movement Rehabilitative Process What is NET? Evolution of NET Requirements of PT and PT Engagement Suspension Clinical reasoning in NET Case study Questions and answers

    3. Movement Natural movement Organised Co-ordinated Effective Efficient Flowing Graceful Abnormal movement Disorganised Compensated Effective Inefficient Restricted Awkward

    4. Rehabilitative Process Symmetry vs Asymmetry Alignment vs Function Normal movement vs Natural movement Dynamic vs Passive Challenge vs Disengagement Plastic adaptation vs Re-access of pattern

    5. Constraint of the Rehab Process Time Knowledge Lack of Direction techniques vs appropriateness observation vs concise feedback of movement protocol

    6. Neuromuscular Energising Therapy NET is a global, interactive assessment and treatment system examining functional movement patterns which offers rapid and often dramatic results. It is a structured and logical treatment approach examining the complexities of movement patterning and muscle activity.

    7. The NET system develops synergistic activity between the therapist and patient during the therapy session. The aim is to improve the patient’s level of appropriate muscle activation and control. Results should be improvement in functional movement patterning and posture and elimination of movement dysfunction.

    8. NET creates a dynamically progressive challenge within the CNS culminating in the technique of suspension, where the patient holds a given position absolutely precisely. NET truly builds the bridge between Neurological and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation and Treatment.

    9. NET is a universal therapy system that can be applied to neurological and musculoskeletal patients of any age, in acute or chronic situations. Stroke Multiple Sclerosis Head Injury Spinal Cord Injury Parkinson’s Disease Musculoskeletal Conditions Sports Injuries Arthritic Conditions

    11. Requirements Therapist Calm Measured Composed In Control Have Direction Patient Willing Relaxed Focused Engaged Challenged

    12. Engagement ...is dependent on the proprioceptive-feedback between a therapist and patient. It is a challenge to both parties that requires focus and direction from both therapist and patient.

    13. Suspension Suspension is the term used to describe the action of a patient sustaining a given position with adequate proximal and distal recruitment and control. Used successfully, suspension is a valuable tool to evaluate control and the engagement between therapist and patient. It is especially useful where habitual compensation has led to a disruption in natural patterns of movement.

    14. Suspension …as if frozen in time and space…

    15. Clinical Reasoning: before movement

    16. Clinical Reasoning: during movement Are they moving as expected? Are they following the arc of movement? Who is controlling the movement? Is the movement sequential or do they “jump” through a region? Do you think you would be able to suspend this patient? If not, where is the break down in the sequence?

    17. Neuromuscular Energising Therapy ... gives total control.

    18. Case Study Stan 10 years post CVA NEVER WALKED Transfers with crouch pivot stand

    19. Prognosis Unlikely to walk? Could walk, but would require x months of Physiotherapy Time limited in NHS £ resource limited in Private What could you achieve in 6 sessions?

    20. After 6 sessions

    21. Challenge your thinking as a therapist……. Recovery potential needs to be re-considered. Your hands are your greatest rehab tool - Engage them! NET brings together acquired knowledge, analytical skills, motivation and challenge but allows “expansive thought” and “creativity” in the rehabilitation process – It will energise you and the patient! A patient cannot achieve maximum potential for recovery without motivation and drive – Challenge yourself … and them! NET!
