  2. Why TESOL? • English Language Proficiency is a great way to begin the plans for your lessons or units. • ‘Language is woven into the fabric of instruction’. Every day words need to be explicitly taught • Many words have multiple meanings when used in different contexts: table, document, letter, glasses, etc… • We need to know what our students already know so we can build on their prior knowledge. • We need to know their deficiencies so we can fill those gaps.

  4. Language of School • Multifaceted English used in classrooms • Students need social and academic proficiencies for success. • The social and academic sections overlap the English Language Proficiency and content area language.

  7. Language Registers • Two main categories- social and academic • Social- face to face, classroom routines, communication with peers • Academic- content information, construct meanings

  8. Social Language • Everyday and instructional language • Everyday- ask for directions, conversations with peers • Instructional – following directions, questions, big ideas

  9. Academic Language • Academic language is required for success in school • Using academic language students acquire deeper meanings, more in depth • Receptive skills: listening and reading • Productive skills: speaking and writing

  10. Language Structure • Vocabulary – understanding key concepts • Grammar- the use of the language • discourse- the organization of written and oral language

  11. Language Functions • How language is used in communication of a message • Questioning, greeting, giving instructions, explaining • What students do with the knowledge- What do we want them to do? How will we know if they have learned anything?
