  1. Golf Course Exploratory Project LAR 1144 by: Richard Shirk, Jr.

  2. Landscape of Golf Courses • The system of a golf course remains the same from course to course whether the course is located in the mountains, along the sea or located in the city, but does differences outside the course affect the game • Does the landscape of a course effect the game?

  3. Courses Across America • There are several different types of courses across America • “Some are on low-lying seaside land, others on rocky headlands above the ocean. Some are on meadowland, showing nature’s gentle side. There are desert courses, courses hewn from swampland, and courses on tropical islands. There are also majestic mountain courses with breath-taking vistas.”

  4. Mountain Courses • “The eighteen holes of the Cascades wander through heavily wooded hills.” • “Distances are deceptive in the mountains.”

  5. Landscape of Mountain Courses • Landscapes heavily wooded and courses have numerous hills that can affect game play

  6. Game Play of Mountain Courses • Courses lined with numerous trees which can affect game play if a player happens to hit the ball into the woods

  7. Seaside Courses • “There are many fine courses in Florida and more still in the nearby islands of the Atlantic, places like Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Some of them are first-rate tests of golf for the expert and all are beautiful with their lush tropical or semi-tropical landscaping.” • “An ocean background, palm trees, tropical climate, smooth greens, are typical of golf in the Bahamas.”

  8. Landscape of Seaside Courses • “The Country Club of Florida is a well-conditioned winter course. Though flat, it offers interesting play for expert and ordinary golfers.” • Courses flat • More open because fewer trees • Seaside

  9. Game Play of Seaside Courses • Courses flat and more open so game play could be much easier on seaside courses • Shots made on holes seaside may be affected by the wind off the ocean

  10. Pebble Beach • The Pebble Beach course is a unique course in the fact that it is ocean-side. Wind from the ocean affects shots and alters golfer’s games • Shots need to be altered so they do not fall into the ocean and mark golfers with a stroke penalty

  11. Conclusion: Does landscape affect the game of golf? • Landscape doesn’t affect the game of golf, however it does affect how a golfer plays the game of golf • Golfers change the way that they play their game depending on the landscape of the course due to the hazards that the course may contain
