  2. Biography • Family Rachel Carson lived with her mom, her dad, her sister Marian, and her brother Robert. She was the youngest. During her childhood her brother was at war. When she was 8 Marian married and her husband moved in. Rachel was very close to her mother.

  3. Biography • House Rachel Carson grew up in a clapboard farmhouse in Springdale, Pennsylvania. The house itself was tiny, but around it was 65 acres of unspoiled land. On a hill, there was an apple and pear orchard called Carson’s Grove. They were both near the Allegheny River.

  4. Personal Qualities • Hardworking • Rachel always extended her research to the very limit by going to museums and asking experts a lot of questions. She also went to libraries, universities and any place she could get her hands on information. To pay for collegeshe tried to get a scholarship, which she got. She also tried to observe creatures in their natural habitats.

  5. Motivation • Love of Nature • Rachel Carson was motivated to write Silent Spring because she wanted people to stop using DDT.

  6. Hardships • Cancer Rachel Carson was diagnosed with cancer in 1960. She died four years later at 57 years old.

  7. Accomplishments • Magna Cum Laude Rachel Carson graduated Pennsylvania College for women Magna Cum Laude (great honor).

  8. Interesting Information • Hall of Fame Rachel Carson is in the Ecology Hall of Fame and was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine.
