  1. Broadcast or narrowcast? WHY DO YOU THINK THIS? Broadcast The left side is broadcastbecause the programs appeal to a wider audience Narrowcast Broadcast Narrowcast The right side are Partially targeted at A certain audience/genre and has programs that appeal to a smaller range of audiences. Narrowcast Broadcast

  2. Type of programmes – and some examples… What could you say about the shows on the channel? Cars, comedy and male because the name is Dave which is a male name. Court Dramas Reconstructions Mystery New tricks Comedy Acronym Go on laugh daily Girls Models Ellen Glamour Cooking Aimed at people who are fans of cookers Repeats Tv history war Patriotism Stuff about Our country Gardens Associated With garden Of eden EVERYTHING

  3. Choose 3 channels – and define the target audience – using CARGEL – explaining WHY you think they are the target audience… Look at the programme listings to help you and think about the name of the channel 1. 2. 3. Eden aimed at 40+ aged people well educated, fans of gardens/reformers, although a young person bored may watch it. It may be for reformers due to the fact it is about causes about environment, which the viewer may agree with. Dave – Males 15+ Although younger audiences may watch top gear GCSE level of education and for fans of cars, and mainstream, however aspirers of the comedians may watch it Alibi – Male/females 40+ Although people younger will watch it, and it requires a degree to understand some of the court cases. Your 3 Channel’s NARROWCAST to A NICHE audience – try to explain what this means The 3 Channels are designed to a certain audience, they base programs around this so They get more views from fans of the specific content showed however they could be Argued as broad, for example channel 5’s audience is very minimal although it is on the Main 6 channels the popularity of five has declined significantly and now less people watch It while they repeat csi and more american based programs with the exception of buying big brother out.

  4. Can you think of any other channels that narrowcast – to niche audiences What are the strengths and weaknesses of a ‘niche’ TV channel? Why do they show the same programmes day in day out? Challenge the channel Is directed at fans of Gameshows such as Teceshi’s castle. Gladiator and many more These programs are full of Adrenaline and action People always want to see What suprises the game brings Each time around Dave Shows the same programs Because they are good for Their target audience mainly males Who are fans of cars and comedy which is narrowcasting, So top gear is repeated due To the target audience which Finds the content Dave posts Appealing and the fact that it Is cheaper Strengths are that… -You post different content rather than mainstream programs -You can satisfy the audience With good content designed For them -You grant yourself an audience Generating you views and money - You know what you are getting Weaknesses are that… -With a more broad audience you get noticed easily. -you bring in audience with more social/ethnic backgrounds. -You generate more income -getting bored

  5. To conclude - explain how these channels (DAVE, GOLD etc) appeal to different ranges of audience than the films we have already looked at  - even though arguably they are all “mainstream”. How are they able to do this? (Cheaper, repeats, no production costs) These channels appeal to more than one audience they have a male/female, different ethnic background class E or Class B, different education and a different age. Like the primary audience for dave male 24+ in class B educated a level, mainstream could watch it However variations say as an example of a secondary audience a female aged 15+, class E educated Gcse aspirer could watch the same exact Program, this shows that dave is directed at males who have a decent understanding that enjoy programs produced about cars and comedians. Mainstream programs show content that relates to the person watching it or a very popular idea, or characters you Could have as role models or escapism could factor into mainstream, but overall mainstream is the ‘’popular’’ tv Shows most people around your age would listen/watch a certain thing, however people choose to go narrow As the content showed is more original and different to the day to day lifestyle as a mainstreamer. Some of you should attempt to comment critically - i.e. is a ‘niche’ TV channel a good idea? Why & why not? Niche channels mostly show repeats of old tv day in day out, because their purpose which is to provide a service you can switch to and know what is coming on however being niche can make your viewers bored if they constantly see repeats but the BBC makes them repeat because it’s cheap and it is providing a service to a small section of viewers, no production cost since they already own it just a matter of putting it on the tv and making money.

  6. THE CHANNELS SHOW THE SAME TYPE OF PROGRAMMES BECAUSE THEY ARE TRYING TO APPEAL TO A SMALL AUDIENCE THAT LIKES SPECIFIC PROGRAMMES – KNOWN AS A “NICHE” AUDIENCE. THEY ARE “NARROWCASTING” THE PROGRAMMES TO A NICHE AUDIENCE. DEFINITIONS: NICHE AUDIENCE When a TV show (or website or magazine or radio station) is aimed at a person’s individual interests - they are said to be a “niche” audience. It appeals to a niche or small or specialist audience. NARROWCAST To transmit programmes (especially by cable / satellite television) confined to the interests of a specific group of viewers, subscribers, or listeners, such as business people, or teenagers. This is the opposite to BROADCAST - e.g. Eastenders appeals to a wide audience (it has 80 year old and 16 year old characters, of different classes and different ethnic groups) of 8 million per episode - therefore it is “broad”cast. Appealing to a wide (broad) audience.
