  1. Chapter 2

  2. Multiplication • Factor times Factor equals Product • F x F = P • 10 x 0.03 = .30 • Division is the opposite process and can be used to check your answer (product) • 30 / 10 = .3

  3. Division • Product divided by Factor equals Factor • P / F = F • Dividend divided by Divisor equals Quotient • Dividend is any number that is to be divided. • Divisor shows the size or groups into which the dividend is to be split. • Quotient shows how many times the divisor is included in the dividend.

  4. Problems Multiplication Division 27 / 1 = _____ 30 / 5 = _____ 625 / 25 = _____ 5.88 / 8 = _____ • _____ x 1 = 27 • _____ x 5 = 30 • _____ x 25 = 625 • _____ x 8 = 5.88

  5. Rounding Using Up or Down Method • Find an estimate of 23 x 48 = 1104 • Round both down 20 x 40 = 800 • Round both up 30 x 50 = 1500 • Answer further from exact

  6. Rounding Using Rule of Five Find an estimate of 23 x 48 = 1104 Five or higher round up and four or lower round down 25 x 50 = 1250 Answer closer to exact

  7. Open Sentences 5 + 4 = 4 + N 8 + N = 7 + 6 N + 6 = 9 - 2 18 – 9 = 4 + N 3 + 9 = N - 2 8 – 3 = N + 3 9 – 6 = 7 - N 3 + N = 15 8 + 7 = N + 8 9 + 3 = 8 + N

  8. Finding Gross Pay • Employee is a person who works for others. • Employer is someone who employs workers. • The amount of money that an employee is paid is called gross pay or gross wages.

  9. Types of Gross Pay • Hourly-paid by the hours worked • Salary-paid a set amount of money for a day, week, month, or year • Commission-paid based on the amount that is sold or produced (piece-rate)

  10. Hourly • Paul Hunt earns $5 an hour at his part-time job. Last week he worked 16 hours. What was his gross pay for the week? • $5 x 16 = ______

  11. Salary • Art Hall is a part-time computer operator. When he works, he is paid a salary of $76 a day by his employer. What is Art’s gross pay for 5 days of work? • $76 x 5 = ______

  12. Commission • Lu Ying works at the Randor Bike Shop and is paid $2.75 for each bike he assembles. During the five working days of one week, he assembled these numbers of bikes: 27, 33, 29, 27, 31. What was Lu’s gross pay that week? • 27 + 33 + 29 + 27 + 31 = ______ • $2.75 x ______ = ______

  13. Finding Average Pay • An average is a single number used to represent a group of numbers. • A simple average is found by adding several numbers and dividing the sum by the number of items added. Another name for simple average is the mean.

  14. Problems • Jack earned $210 for 35 hours of work. What was his average pay per hour? • $210 / 35 = $6 • Double check your work • $6 x 35 = $210

  15. Problems Continued • The Wilmark Company has 8 employee. Five of the employees earn $9 an hour, two earn $7 an hour, and 1 earns $13 an hour. What is the average amount per hour that these employees are paid? • (5 x $9) + (2 x $7) + (1 x $13) = 8 employees and a gross pay of $72 for an average of ($72 / 8) $9
