Understanding Design Tools and Techniques in AS Level ICT

Design tools are vital software applications used to create solutions to problems. Often, multiple software solutions are required; for instance, a website might be built with a web authoring program, while images may need editing with specialized software. Selecting the right design tools is crucial and depends on their availability, the designer's experience with them, and compatibility with other software. Design techniques refer to how these tools are employed to create effective solutions and are influenced by the chosen tools and the designer's problem-solving experience.

  2. What are design tools? • Design tools are the software used to produce a solution to a problem • In many cases a solution will require the use of more than one piece of software • For example, a website may be produced using a web authoring program but any images used may need to be manipulated using image editing software N.B. Design tools are sometimes also referred to as ICT tools

  3. Choosing design tools • Choosing the most appropriate design tools for a solution is very important • Choice will depend on: • What design tools are available • The level of experience the designer has with the design tools that are available • Whether or not the design tools that are chosen are compatible with other software that will be used

  4. Design techniques • Design techniques are the ways in which design tools are used to produce a viable solution to a problem • These are dependant upon: • The design tools that have been chosen • The level of experience the designer has with the design tools that have been chosen • The level of experience the designer has with solving similar problems
