World Rising Imperialism • As countries industrialized, they needed more and more raw materials to make goods. • By the 1800s, European countries began to build colonies in other areas of the world to find the raw materials they needed. • Africa, Asia, and Oceania were areas where raw materials were highly available.
Imperialism • What is it? • Defined as the control of weak or underdeveloped nation by a powerful nation. • Sometimes called Colonialism.
Why Imperialism? • Causes: • Industrial Revolution • Many nations needed colonies to provide a cheap and constant supply of raw materials. • They also used colonies to sell their manufactured products.
2 Types of Control under Imperialism! • Indirect: Weak nation can control smaller matters but the Imperialist, stronger country will handle the most important. Think of the control being split in half! • Direct: Stronger/Imperialist country controls all matters of the weaker nation.
