  1. Practical 1b: Development of aquatic resources in a remote region Dan Minchin, Marine Organism Investigations, Ireland Coastal Research and Planning Institute, University of Klaipeda, Lithuania. September/November 2013

  2. The teams • Are there any needs to change people on teams?

  3. The teams • Are there any needs to change people on teams? • One person in each team will represent a spokesperson on the final day to cover the overall project

  4. The teams • Are there any needs to change people on teams? • One person in each team will represent a spokesperson on the final day to cover the overall project • All others within a team are expected to support your spokesperson

  5. The teams • Are there any needs to change people on teams? • One person in each team will represent a spokesperson on the final day to cover the overall project • All others within a team are expected to support your spokesperson • You will discuss the duties among yourselves. Each of you will have different responsibilities. You must decide this with your whole team

  6. The teams • Are there any needs to change people on teams? • One person in each team will represent a spokesperson on the final day to cover the overall project • All others within a team are expected to support your spokesperson • You will discuss the duties among yourselves. Each of you will have different responsibilities. You must decide this with your whole team • If you have a different language, or you have special interest , discuss how this may benefit your team

  10. Confidentiality and work ethics • From now on your work within your team is not to be divulged to any other team(s) • Team work depends on all making an effort if there is to be a successful outcome • Confidentiality is how scientists work in developing areas of science • What time you put into the project depends upon yourselves

  11. Review of the exercise • You are wrecked in a remote world region in 1784 • Your team survives the shipwreck in good health • You are unable to leave the Lagoon area • You are likely to be rescued in ten years time • There is a local community of 2000 • They have little trading ability but good local aquatic resources • Your mission using the literature and the internet is to develop the local resources • You have ten years to do this

  12. You are wrecked with few resources Remember you need to make an important choice

  13. Choose eight of these • Axes • A large saw • Adzes • Several knives • Copper nails • Sailcloth • Lamps • Rope • Needles • A standard dissecting kit • Whiskey • Compass • Ships clock • Bucket

  14. Choose eight of these Your team spokesperson will provide me with a list of the eight items your team chooses in an envelope tomorrow • Axes • A large saw • Adzes • Several knives • Copper nails • Sailcloth • Lamps • Rope • Needles • A standard dissecting kit • Whiskey • Compass • Ships clock • Bucket

  15. TheŠvyturysLagoonYou are wrecked here

  16. Review of the local situation • They speak an unknown language • They are suspicious of strangers • They have myths of their resources arising from: • - a recent cholera event • - likely PSP events occurring seasonally • - ciguaterra poisoning has occurred • There is little arable land • They have no cattle or sheep • Food is generally scarce • They have no trading opportunities with inland villages

  17. Climate and weather • The lagoon has a Mediterranean climate • There is seasonal flooding of the nearby delta area from heavy rains • In the wet season there can be gales, often two a year • In the dry season winds are normally Beaufort 1-3 • Humidity is general high 80% -90%

  18. Climate and weather • The lagoon has a Mediterranean climate • There is seasonal flooding of the nearby delta area from heavy rains • In the wet season there can be gales, often two a year • In the dry season winds are normally Beaufort 1-3 • Humidity is general high 80% -90% • This will have a bearing on the species you choose to exploit

  19. The Švyturys Lagoon conditions • This is a circular lagoon on a large naturally forested large island. • Other villages exist but communications are difficult. • There is a small settlement to the north of the lagoon on a river delta. • Rocky southern shoreline with some sandy beaches • Sea temperatures range from 15-25 ºC • Salinities range 15-30 psu in the delta area and 3o-35 in the southern part of the Lagoon • Tidal range at spring tides is 1.5m • Secchi-disc readings vary from 3-8m • A productive lagoon with some algal blooms

  20. Review of aquatic resources • Two fish species seasonally migrate each year • There are tworesident exploitable fishes • There are tworesident exploitable molluscs • There is one migrating mollusc • There are two resident exploitable crustaceans • There are two non-edible exploitable aquatic resources • There are two algae present that can be used • There is one impacting alien species • You will ranch and cultivate two of the above species

  21. Resources • You decide what these specific aquatic resources are • They need to be based on existing species which are utilised in some world region • You may use the literature and the internet to build your case • You need to overcome several problems • There are also non-aquatic resources

  22. Non-aquatic resources • Phragmites australis occurs on the west side of the river • There is a nearby Pinus radiata forest • There are clay pits near the settlement • Linum usitatissimum grows wild • Salix spp are abundant on the east side of the river • Sands have a high silica content • Felis silvestris catus has been domesticated • Capra hircus is wild • There is a bog to the north of the sea-marsh

  23. Problems • No metal tools • Alexandrium tamarense blooms in some years • Vibrio cholerae strain 001 event resulted in four deaths • Seasonal flooding can take place of the marsh area • An initial language difficulty • A storm will have damaged equipment in one year • There is one life-threatening aquatic metazoan present, you decide what this is • One of you has a near death experience based on a harmful aquatic species event, you solve the problem

  24. The evaluation • The evaluation will be based on teamwork and individual contributions • A Ghant chart of the resource activities for the ten year period will be presented by a spokesperson • A spokesperson will be appointed by you for each team for the general introduction • Within each team you will divide your responsibilities and then make presentations on these • You will all make ppt presentions of your responsibilities within the team • You MUST communicate with the rest of your team • Marginal levels of team members will be decided on how well they undertake answers in the brain ring

  25. Assessment of the project • The spokesperson will represent the team. 10% of marks will be given for their presentation. The mark obtained will be the same mark for the entire team (10 minutes), so you must help your spokesperson • 80% of the marks will be given to each individual presentation (10 minutes) • 10% will be given to each team for debate • For each resource inappropriately managed marks will be deducted from a candidate

  26. Timing for Practical 1 • (item 3) Tuesday 16 September 2013 - Introduction and discussion - Selection of team members • (item 5) Wednesday 17 September 2013 - Review of project plan - Exchanges of team members if required - Confidentiality to teams from now on • (item 15) Thursday 21 November 2013 - brain ring/open debate • (items 17) Friday 22 November 2013 - Presentations and examination

  27. SO: • Consider that you are now wrecked and safely ashore • Each team is entirely on their own • I am no longer able to help you, your survival depend on yourselves • This is life • GOOD LUCK
