The Švyturys Lagoon conditions • This is a circular lagoon on a large naturally forested large island. • Other villages exist but communications are difficult. • There is a small settlement to the north of the lagoon on a river delta. • Rocky southern shoreline with some sandy beaches • Sea temperatures range from 15-25 ºC • Salinities range 15-30 psu in the delta area and 3o-35 in the southern part of the Lagoon • Tidal range at spring tides is 1.5m • Secchi-disc readings vary from 3-8m • A productive lagoon with some algal blooms

Non-aquatic resources • Phragmites australis occurs on the west side of the river • There is a nearby Pinus radiata forest • There are clay pits near the settlement • Linum usitatissimum grows wild • Salix spp are abundant on the east side of the river • Sands have a high silica content • Felis silvestris catus has been domesticated • Capra hircus is wild • There is a bog to the north of the sea-marsh

Problems • No metal tools • Alexandrium tamarense blooms in some years • Vibrio cholerae strain 001 event resulted in four deaths • Seasonal flooding can take place of the marsh area • An initial language difficulty • A storm will have damaged equipment in one year • There is one life-threatening aquatic metazoan present, you decide what this is • One of you has a near death experience based on a harmful aquatic species event, you solve the problem

24. The evaluation • The evaluation will be based on teamwork and individual contributions • A Ghant chart of the resource activities for the ten year period will be presented by a spokesperson • A spokesperson will be appointed by you for each team for the general introduction • Within each team you will divide your responsibilities and then make presentations on these • You will all make ppt presentions of your responsibilities within the team • You MUST communicate with the rest of your team • Marginal levels of team members will be decided on how well they undertake answers in the brain ring

25. Assessment of the project • The spokesperson will represent the team. 10% of marks will be given for their presentation. The mark obtained will be the same mark for the entire team (10 minutes), so you must help your spokesperson • 80% of the marks will be given to each individual presentation (10 minutes) • 10% will be given to each team for debate • For each resource inappropriately managed marks will be deducted from a candidate
