Terms to know – copy • Character- person or animal in a story • Types of characters: • Static- character stays the same in the story • Dynamic- character changes through out the story • Characterization- how the author describes a character • Types of characterization • Indirect- the author describes the character • Direct the author directly tells you about the character • Theme- the lesson or moral of the story

Terms to know- copy • Conflict – the main problem in a story • Types of conflict • Internal- when a character has conflict with himself • External – when a character has conflict with outsiders • Inference- when you use your background knowledge and what you read to make a conclusion • Plot- what happens in a story Climax Falling action Rising action Exposition Resolution

  4. Langston Hughes • Poet and writer during the Harlem Renaissance • Goal was to show mainstream America that African Americas were beautiful people • Part of the “Black is Beautiful” movement.
