Fish are the largest group of vertebrates on Earth, with over 29,000 known species. As ectothermic creatures, most fish cannot generate their own body heat and breathe through gills, which extract oxygen from water. They possess fins for swimming and protective bony scales, with streamlined bodies that enhance their movement. Fish have diverse diets, consuming algae, plankton, crustaceans, and even other fish. Notably, jawless fish, or Agnatha, are among the oldest species, with fossils dating back 250 million years, showcasing the incredible history of these aquatic animals.
