What is community service?

Community service is when a person or a group of people do something that benefits their community in some way. They could clean a park, collect items for charities such as Toys for Tots, or help the elderly in nursing homes.

  • Teaches positive values, leadership, citizenship, and personal responsibility
  • Empowers students as learners, teachers, achievers, and leaders
  • Invites students to become members of their community
  • Teaches job skills and prepares students for careers after college
  • Helps with community education
  • Contributes thousands of hours of service to people in need, non-profit agencies, private sector companies, non-governmental and governmental agencies
how to get involved
How to Get Involved
  • Participate in volunteer programs such as Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society, and nursing homes.
  • Join Boy Scouts
  • Join Girl Scouts
    • Both Boy and Girl Scouts have the opportunity to earn the Eagle Award or the Gold Award. Both awards are based on carrying out a community service project.

Work to reduce suffering and create meaningful social change for animals

Confront nation and global cruelties such as dog-fighting, puppy mills, and clubbing animals for the fur trade through major campaigns

  • Goal is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world
  • All people can join together with families in need to build houses
  • Runs off of volunteer labor and donations of money and materials

  • It is sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise money for the fight against cancer.
  • Anyone can participate.
  • It celebrates the lives of those who have battled cancer, and remembers those who have been lost to the disease.
  • The money that is raised finds cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life-affirming patient services.
