  1. Section 3.2 Finding Part

  2. The Components of a Percent Problem • 1. BASE: the whole or total, starting point, or that to which something is compared • 2. RATE: the percent (%) • 3. PART: The result of multiplying the base and rate. PART of the whole.

  3. The Percent Formula • P = B x R • Part = Base x Rate • Ex: find the part • 1) 25% of 72 • 2) 130% of 210 • 3) ½ % of 900

  4. Calculating Sales Tax • P = B x R • Sales tax = Sales x Sales Tax Rate EX: Your dinner bill (not including the 7.5% sales tax) was $9.25. Determine the amount of sales tax and the total cost before tip. Round to the nearest penny.

  5. Helpful hints… • 1. The base is usually preceded by words like OF or ON. It represents the whole. • 2. The rate is followed by the word percent or %. • 3. The part is in the same units as the base and is usually a portion of the base.

  6. Examples (from p 92) • 18. A survey of 30 large retailers showed that expenses averaged 92.4% of total sales. Estimate the expenses for a firm with $138 million is quarterly sales to the nearest tenth of a million dollars.

  7. 25. It is estimated that 29.5% of automobile crashes are caused by driver distractions, such as texting. If there are 16,450 automobile crashes in a study, what number would be caused by driver distractions? Round to the nearest whole number.

  8. 32. A family of four with a monthly income of $5150 spends 90% of its earnings and saves the balance for a down payment of a house. Find • (a) the monthly savings and • (b) the annual savings of the family.
